This workshop exceeds the Florida Department of Health’s Domestic Violence continuing education requirement for all licensed providers.  The content presented is specifically relevant to areas of clinical social work and mental health practice.

Course Title

Domestic Violence: A Clinical Perspective


This workshop provides medical, substance abuse and mental health professionals with the required information to assist in identifying and assessing the needs and concerns of domestic violence victims. The workshop content is especially appropriate for clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists, and mental health counselors with a tool which allows them to incorporate an assessment of potential risks during an initial assessment process.

Participants will explore:

  • Dynamics of power and control which influence violence in relationships
  • Justifications used to excuse battering behaviors and a continuum of violence
  • Effects of victimization on the victim(s) and others
  • Clinical assessments
  • Safety planning and referral to local community services that may improve the safety of the victim
